Can mold kill you?

Rarely, but it can make you extremely ill, depending upon your age and health and the species of mold present.

Can mold affect my health?

Yes. The normal health risk factors apply. The very young, the old. Pregnant women. Those with already compromised immunity and related health problems. See the opening page of this website to find a list of the possible symptoms of mold exposure.

Is black mold dangerous?

Mold appears in a variety of colors, depending on the species and its food source. Most molds are allergenic and can cause a variety of health problems. Some black mold species are extremely dangerous.

Can I use bleach to kill mold?

No. Bleach contains about 98 percent water. The small amount of chlorine in the bleach will retard its growth, but not kill it. Mold loves water, and needs it to survive. It may appear to be dead, and can easily reactivate. Use a fungicide instead.

Can I treat mold myself?

Technically, yes. However, I would recommend hiring a professional mold assessor who will make a thorough evaluation and then make recommendations to permanently correct the problem.

How can I tell if I have a mold problem?

It needs to be examined and tested by a licensed mold assessor. Do-it-yourself kits are not reliable. They detect the presence of, but not the amount of mold. All homes have mold. But the question is, "Is it excessive?". Do not use a mold remediator. It is illegal for a mold remediator in the State of Florida to do any assessment due to conflicts of interest.

What does mold smell like?

Musty, meaty, earthy, wet socks or rotten wood.

Does Homeowners Insurance cover mold?

Most Homeowners Insurance Policies in Florida cover up to $10,000, some premium policies cover up to $50,000.
